CENSUS

Every 10 years there is a census in the U. K. The first census was recorded in 1841. A census must be 100 years old before it is published. The 1901 census was published in 2001.

A census only includes those that are in the household at the time of recording. If someone is absent (eg. away at sea on a fishing boat) they are not recorded.

The original census includes Names, Ages, (it’s common for ages to be wrong. A person who is appears as 60 in one census, for example, might appear as 65 in the next one 10 years later!), Relationships, (head of the house, wife of head, son/daughter etc.), Occupations, Parish and County of Birth.

The census on this site has been enhanced to include information which has been researched over several years, using extensive local knowledge. It has been possible to include the unnamed husband, the wife’s maiden name, both sets of parents, the marriage date, and dates of births and deaths. If known who the family married, and any child who was born and died between censuses.
