OLD PARISH RECORDS

Before 1855 all records of births, marriages and deaths were kept by the Church. These were called the Old Parish Records. All Parishes began keeping records at different times. The Parish of Gamrie which stretches from Pennan in the East to the River Deveron in the West began keeping records of Christenings from 1704, Births from 1745, Marriages from 1787 and Deaths from 1822. All these records were kept by Parish Churches until 1854 after which the Government takes control and the recording of Births, Marriages and Deaths known as Civil Registration.

The site here contains all the Births from Powiston/Gardenstown and Crovie between 1704 – 1854 and includes births from the farming community, if these births were witnessed by villagers. Each product contains 100 or more birth records.

In 1721 the village of Powiston was re-named Gardenstown after Lord Gardenstown the Law-Lord.
